UK’s largest plastering project wins international competition

The £multi-million Phase 1 refurbishment of the landmark Treasury building in London’s Whitehall, has won first place in an international competition to find the best plastering project in the world over the past two years.

The work, which was carried out using massive quantities of Thistle plasters and associated products from British Gypsum and its sister company, is thought to be the largest re-plastering project ever undertaken in the UK, and has taken plastering contractor, THE BDL Group plc (BDL), two years to complete.

A team of 50 of BDL’s most skilled plasterers repaired more than 35,000m2  of walls and 12,500m2  of ceilings to a very high quality finish, and repaired or recreated large areas of ornate plaster mouldings using castings taken from undamaged cornices and other decorative features throughout the almost ½ mile long building.

In some areas of the 100 year old complex, demolition work was so extensive that completely new wall linings had to be created using Gyproc plasterboard finished with Thistle Board Finish plaster. Intricate curved window heads had to be recreated in-situ using wire lath and three-coat Thistle plasterwork.

The team also installed 7000m2 of new partitioning, using GypWall metal stud partitioning system, and around 5000m2 of new British Gypsum ceilings, largely using the company’s recently launched Arteco Rigitone perforated gypsum boards in one of the UK’s first major installations of this newly introduced acoustic board range.

The BPB International Trophy competition, which is staged every two years by BPB plc, the world’s leading manufacturer of plasterboard and plaster systems, included entries from more than 18 countries worldwide. Entries were judged against a number of key criteria, including skill and originality, interpretation of the original design and the quality of finish. BDL’s work on the Treasury building Phase 1 was awarded first place in the plastering category at a ceremony in Rome during May.

As well as success in the competition, BDL and Thistle plasters so impressed the client, HM Government, that they have now been awarded the contract for the Phase 2 refurbishment.
